When People Learn

When we talk about 21st century learning, we are talking about more than simply taking in or gathering information, consistent with what many people often think about learning today. Many do not understand that when real learning occurs, there is always some degree or type of change. This is because real learning is generative, and it generates change.

Genuine learning produces change and increases our ability to create. This is why we need people in our companies to be learners; so they can create something new from what they learn. Thought leader Peter Senge in his classic book, “The Fifth Discipline,” introduces the word “metanoia,” which he describes as a better grasp of the deeper meaning of learning. The term, “metanoia,” involves a fundamental shift in mindset. In other words, when our mindset changes as a byproduct of learning, we are then able to achieve something we were not able to achieve prior to our metanoia experience.

Genuine learning is also how we develop and become our best selves. Once we begin to function as our best selves, we are then capable of bringing our personal best to any environment in which we actively participate. This is what Psychologist Maslow called self-actualization, what he considered to be the highest need that human beings have. When achieved, it serves both the individual’s needs and the organizational needs. It is a win-win for all concerned.
